QTR-8RC Line Following Reflectance IR Sensor Array
The QTR-8RC Line Following Reflectance IR Sensor Array is a compact multi-channel infrared sensor board designed primarily for line-following and line-tracking robots. It features eight IR emitter and phototransistor pairs arranged in a row, providing multiple sensing points across the width of the robot.
Each sensing element emits infrared light toward the surface and detects the amount of reflected light. Light-colored surfaces generally reflect more infrared light, while dark surfaces reflect less. By comparing the readings from the eight sensors, a microcontroller can determine the position of a line and make the necessary steering adjustments.
The QTR-8RC uses an RC-based output method. Instead of providing a conventional analog voltage, each sensor output can be read by measuring the discharge time with a compatible digital I/O pin. How Does the QTR-8RC Work?
The QTR-8RC uses eight infrared emitter/receiver pairs to detect changes in surface reflectance.
When the IR LEDs illuminate a surface, the phototransistors measure the reflected infrared light. A white or reflective surface typically returns more IR light, while a black or dark surface returns less.
The sensor’s RC output allows the microcontroller to measure the sensor response by timing how long the output takes to discharge. These readings can then be processed by software to determine the position of a line.
For example, if the left-side sensors detect a dark line while the right-side sensors detect a light surface, the robot can adjust its motor speeds to steer toward the line.
