YF-201 Water Flow Sensor

The YF-201 Water Flow Sensor is a popular water flow measurement sensor designe for electronics, automation, monitoring and DIY applications. It uses an internal Hall-effect sensor and rotating impeller to detect the movement of water through the sensor.

As water passes through the sensor, the internal rotor rotates. The Hall-effect sensor detects this rotation and produces a pulse signal. A compatible microcontroller can count these pulses to estimate the water flow rate and calculate the total amount of water that has pass through the sensor.

The YF-201 is commonly use with Arduino, ESP32, ESP8266 and other microcontroller-base systems. It is suitable for projects such as water consumption monitoring, automatic irrigation, liquid-flow monitoring, smart water systems and educational electronics projects.

Its compact design and simple pulse-output interface make the YF-201 Water Flow Sensor a convenient choice for measuring water flow in small-scale electronic and automation projects.

Key Features

  • YF-201 water flow measurement sensor
  • Hall-effect sensing technology
  • Generates pulse output according to water flow
  • Suitable for measuring water flow rate
  • Commonly use with Arduino and ESP32
  • Compact and easy-to-install design
  • Suitable for DIY electronics and automation
  • Useful for water consumption monitoring
  • Common 1/2-inch pipe connection
  • Can be use to calculate flow rate and total water volume

How Does the YF-201 Water Flow Sensor Work?

The YF-201 contains a small rotor inside its water passage. When water flows through the sensor, the rotor spins.

A built-in Hall-effect sensor detects the rotation of the rotor and produces electrical pulses. The number of pulses generate over a period of time can be processe by a microcontroller to determine the approximate flow rate.

By continuously counting the pulses, a controller can also estimate the total volume of water that has pass through the sensor.

The actual relationship between pulse frequency and flow rate should be calibrate for the specific sensor and installation because flow characteristics can vary between units and operating conditions.

Benefits of YF-201 Water Flow Sensor

Easy Flow Monitoring

The pulse output makes it relatively simple to connect the sensor to a microcontroller.

Hall-Effect Detection

The sensor uses a Hall-effect device to detect the rotation of the internal impeller.

Suitable for DIY Projects

Its compact design makes it suitable for Arduino, ESP32 and other electronics projects.

Flow Rate and Volume Measurement

With suitable programming and calibration, pulse data can be use to estimate flow rate and accumulate water volume.

Wide Range of Applications

The sensor can be use in irrigation, automation, water monitoring and educational projects.

Compatible Microcontrollers

The YF-201 can commonly be interface with:

  • Arduino Uno
  • Arduino Nano
  • Arduino Mega
  • ESP32
  • ESP8266
  • STM32
  • Raspberry Pi with suitable signal interfacing
  • Other microcontrollers with compatible digital input circuitry

Installation Notes

For reliable measurements, install the sensor according to the manufacturer’s recommend flow direction and ensure the plumbing connections are secure.

Avoid using the sensor with dirty water or liquids containing particles that could interfere with the internal rotor. The sensor should also be operated within its specified pressure, temperature and flow limits.

For accurate water-volume measurements, calibration is recommended rather than relying solely on a generic pulse-to-liter conversion.
